The Project
A homeowner in the Vista Ridge neighborhood of Ridgefield reached out ready to replace the solid hardwood and carpet throughout their home with engineered hardwood — covering the main floor, the upper floor, and two staircases, roughly 2,740 square feet in total.
Beyond the material upgrade, the homeowner had one specific concern that shaped the whole approach to this job: noise. The home is a three-story house — main floor, upper floor, and basement — totaling 3,562 square feet. We installed engineered hardwood across the main floor and upper floor (2,740 sq ft), while the basement remained LVP. In a home with this many levels, sound traveled easily between floors, and the family wanted a quieter home, not just new floors.
The Prep Work
Before any new flooring went down, our team removed the existing solid hardwood and carpet throughout the home. During the walkthrough, we identified squeaking in several areas of the subfloor — a common issue in homes where subfloor fasteners loosen over time. We addressed those problem areas directly during prep, rather than installing over them and letting the issue persist under the new floor.
Full-Spread Glue-Down for Sound Reduction
To meet the homeowner's noise concerns, we used a full-spread glue-down installation with a high-quality adhesive that does three jobs at once:
- Sound-dampening — reduces the transfer of footstep and impact noise between floors
- Adhesive bonding — securely bonds the engineered hardwood to the subfloor across the full surface, not just at the seams
- Water membrane protection — adds a moisture barrier layer beneath the flooring for long-term durability
Staircases: Glue and Nail
The two staircases were finished using a combined glue-and-nail method, giving the treads the extra hold and rigidity stairs need under regular daily use.
The Result
Two weeks from start to finish, the home went from creaky solid hardwood and carpet to a full engineered hardwood floor across both levels and both staircases — quieter, squeak-free, and built to hold up over time.
