The Project
This job took us across 10 brand-new townhome units in a Hazel Dell development, all needing carpet installed on their staircases as part of the build-out. Working across that many units back-to-back meant staying efficient without cutting corners on any single staircase — each one got the same prep and installation approach, unit after unit.
The Prep Work
Before any carpet went down, we cleared out construction debris and leftover drywall scraps that had collected on the stair treads — a normal byproduct of other trades finishing their work ahead of us. Only once the stairs were clean did we install the tackstrip.
Tackstrip on Three Sides, Not Just the Standard One
Standard practice is tackstrip along the base of each step. On every one of these staircases, we took it a step further and installed tackstrip on both sides of each tread as well as the back — not something the industry requires, but a step we take because it keeps the carpet held tighter across the whole tread, not just at the front edge, and it holds up longer under the heavy daily wear stairs take on.
The Result
Across all 10 units, this job came together in 3 days — carpeted staircases that are tight, clean, and built to hold up under the kind of daily foot traffic a new townhome community sees from day one.
